CODA hizo historia convirtiéndose en la primera película de un importante servicio de streaming en ganar un Oscar a la mejor película. En un momento en que el negocio del cine está bajo presión para ampliar su apertura y contar más historias sobre personas de color y grupos subrepresentados, la victoria de CODA rompió barreras en otras formas importantes. La película, que se centra en la relación del único miembro oyente de una familia sorda con sus padres y su hermano, ha sido elogiada por su descripción sensible de la comunidad discapacitada y el uso de actores sordos.

Dune fue la gran ganadora de los premios técnicos como efectos, sonido, partitura y edición.

Fue una noche de momentos memorables, ninguno más que la bofetada que se escuchó en todo el mundo. Will Smith fue elegido mejor actor por su interpretación de Richard Williams, el padre de las grandes del tenis Venus y Serena Williams, en King Richard, pero su gran noche se vio ensombrecida por un extraño momento fuera de guión. En un momento, el actor subió al escenario y golpeó a Chris Rock después de que el cómico hiciera una broma sobre que su esposa, Jada Pinkett Smith, estaría en una secuela de “G.I. Jane” debido a su corte de pelo muy corto. Pinkett Smith ha hablado abiertamente sobre la pérdida de cabello debido a la alopecia.
